Do You Need Crown after Root Canal

Patients always ask the question:  Do I need crown after Endodontic treatment or Root Canal treatment.
The answer is : Yes

You need crown for couple of reasons:

  • Root Canal treatment removes all the nerves from inside of the tooth root canal system(Pulp).  This procedure also removes all the blood supply to the Pulp, which causes tooth to become brittle and fragile.  We need a crown to prevent tooth fracture.
  • After Root canal treatment to prevent re-infection of the Pulp, we need to have better seal of the access to the canals.  Crowns are proven to provide better seal and protection from microorganisms and saliva.
The patient on the picture had previous Root Canal treatment done by another dentist, but did not have crown placed on the tooth.  As the result tooth has fractured and root canal treatment failed.
We proceeded with extraction due to higher cost of saving tooth #19 and poor prognosis of root canal re-treatment.
